The Critical Intersection of Animal Behavior and Veterinary Science
For much of veterinary history, the focus was predominantly physiological: pathology, pharmacology, surgery, and microbiology. An animal was often viewed as a biological system of organs and tissues. Over the past three decades, however, a paradigm shift has occurred. Today, the veterinary field recognizes that behavior is the sixth vital sign (alongside temperature, pulse, respiration, pain, and nutritional status). Understanding animal behavior is no longer an elective specialization; it is a core competency that impacts everything from routine exams to public health.
4. Course formats & delivery
- Microcourses (1–3 hours): quick skills like “How to change a tire.”
- Short courses (4–12 hours): multi-session practical skills.
- Certificates (40–120 hours): mastery tracks combining projects and assessments.
- Workshops & meetups: in-person or virtual practice sessions.
- Peer-led cohorts: small groups learning together with a facilitator.
- Pain and Aggression: A normally docile cat that hisses or bites when handled may not be "dominant" or "mean." It may be suffering from feline osteoarthritis or dental disease. Similarly, a dog that suddenly growls at children may have a pinched nerve or hip dysplasia. Treating the pain often resolves the aggression without behavioral medication.
- Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS): In geriatric pets, nighttime pacing, disorientation, or loss of housetraining mimics "senility" but is a neuropathological condition similar to human Alzheimer’s. Veterinarians now use behavioral checklists to diagnose CDS early, allowing for treatment with selegiline, environmental enrichment, and specialized diets (e.g., medium-chain triglycerides).
- Endocrine Links: Hypothyroidism in dogs is strongly linked to increased aggression, fearfulness, and anxiety. Hyperthyroidism in cats often presents as hyperactivity, restlessness, and excessive vocalization—symptoms easily mistaken for behavioral quirks rather than thyroid disease.
