Train Simulator Classic Keyboard Controls -
The rain lashed against the windows of my small apartment, but inside the cab of the Class 68, everything was bathed in the warm, amber glow of the instrument panel. I reached out—not to a physical lever, but to the worn keys of my keyboard—and prepared for the midnight run from London to Peterborough.

Based on this report, we recommend:
- W (Increase Throttle / Power): This applies more traction power. In a diesel, it opens the fuel rack; in an electric, it draws more current. Tap it for fine adjustments, hold it for rapid power increase.
- S (Decrease Throttle / Power): Reduces traction power. In most modern engines, hitting "S" while at zero throttle will engage "Idle." Note: It does not apply brakes.
- A (Increase Brake / Locomotive Brake): Applies the brake that acts only on the locomotive's wheels. Use this for gentle speed adjustments or keeping slack in check.
- D (Decrease Brake / Release Brake): Releases the locomotive brake. Releasing fully takes time based on the brake pipe simulation.
- Q (Increase Train Brake / Automatic Brake): This applies the brakes to every car in your consist. This is your primary stopping tool.
- Z (Decrease Train Brake / Release Automatic Brake): Releases the train brakes. Crucial tip: In realistic mode, after a heavy application, you must wait for the brake pipe to recharge before releasing fully.
