Abstract
This paper examines the 2021 Hindi-dubbed version of the 2014 American parody film The Hungover Games. While the original film is a low-budget mashup of The Hunger Games, The Hangover, and other pop-culture tropes, its official Hindi dub—released seven years later—offers a unique lens into the evolving Indian market for niche Hollywood content in the post-pandemic streaming era. The analysis focuses on translation strategies, cultural adaptation of humor, and the phenomenon of “late dubbing” for digital platforms. Findings suggest that the 2021 Hindi dub repurposes the original’s meta-humor through localized references and voice acting tropes, transforming a dated parody into a cult viewing experience for Indian audiences.
Plot Summary (No Spoilers)
After a bachelor party gone wrong in a futuristic dystopian Los Angeles, four friends—Bradley, Ed, Justin, and the groom, Glen—wake up with no memory of the previous night. They soon discover they’ve been selected as “tributes” in the annual “Hungover Games,” a deadly reality TV competition run by a dictator named Snowger (a mix of Hunger Games’ President Snow and The Hangover’s Mr. Chow). The film follows their drunk, confused, and increasingly ridiculous attempts to survive while piecing together what happened to Glen’s missing fiancée.
