The transgender community has been a driving force of LGBTQ+ culture since its inception, moving from the margins of history to the forefront of a global civil rights movement. Flags & Symbols

  • Rainbow Flag: General LGBTQ+ pride (Gilbert Baker, 1978). Each color had a meaning (sex, life, healing, sunlight, nature, magic/art, serenity, spirit).
  • Transgender Flag: Light blue (traditional color for baby boys), pink (for baby girls), white (for those transitioning, non-binary, or intersex). Designed by Monica Helms in 1999.
  • Progress Pride Flag: Rainbow flag with a chevron of black/brown (marginalized LGBTQ+ people of color) and light blue/pink/white (trans community).
  • Other flags: Bisexual (pink/purple/blue), Pansexual (pink/yellow/blue), Non-Binary (yellow/white/purple/black), Asexual (black/grey/white/purple).

Despite the "pride" of the umbrella, the transgender community often faces steeper hurdles than their cisgender (LGB) peers.

Generational Shifts: In surveys, 57% of transgender respondents under age 35 identify as non-binary, compared to 36% of those over 35.
