What is MAME?
MAME is an emulator designed to preserve arcade games. It emulates the hardware (CPU, sound chips, video circuitry) of arcade cabinets, allowing you to play original ROM dumps on modern systems.

- Last version before major changes – Shortly after 0.139, MAME underwent a significant internal rewrite (new core, changed ROM naming/requirements). Many games that worked in 0.139 broke in later versions without updated ROMs.
- Final support for older ROM naming conventions – Later MAME versions require “merged sets” and verified CHD (Compressed Hard Disk) files for many games. v0.139 has fewer CHD requirements.
- Smaller total size – A full v0.139 ROM set (without CHDs) is roughly 25–30 GB. Including CHDs (for games like Killer Instinct, NBA Jam, etc.) it can reach 150+ GB, but that’s still smaller than modern full sets (500+ GB).
- Compatibility with lightweight frontends – Many retro handhelds and older PCs run v0.139 easily.
Compatibility: It avoids "missing file" errors common in modern sets by using a snapshot of arcade history that doesn't change frequently. About ROMs & CHD's - EasyEmu : MAME Guide Error 1: "One or more ROMs/CHDs are missing
