Creating a bootable installer (official Catalina)

  1. Download "Install macOS Catalina.app" into /Applications.
  2. Use a USB drive (16 GB+), erase as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) named "MyVolume".
  3. In Terminal: 
    sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Catalina.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume
  4. Reboot holding Option, choose the USB installer.

Step 3 – The actual “dow patched” installation process on an unsupported Mac

  1. Boot from USB patched with 19A583.
  2. The installer runs, doesn’t complain about “this Mac is not supported.”
  3. After installation, you must run the post-install patch (also part of the patcher tool) to copy the legacy kexts to the installed system volume, because the fresh Catalina system has overwritten them with the stock (incompatible) versions.
  4. Rebuild kernel cache with kextcache and reboot.
