Plot Summary
The story follows Zainuddin (Herjunot Ali), a young Minangkabau man raised in Surabaya, who returns to his homeland in West Sumatra. There, he falls in love with Hayati (Pevita Pearce), a beautiful woman from a noble family. However, their romance is blocked by strict adat (customary law) and class differences. Heartbroken, Zainuddin leaves for Betawi (now Jakarta), becomes a successful journalist, and marries another woman.
