Why the peculiar name? In the 1884 U.S. presidential election, "Mugwumps" were Republicans who refused to support their party's candidate, instead voting for the Democrat Grover Cleveland. They sat on the fence, with their "mug" on one side and their "wump" on the other.
mugwump, a moniker borrowed from the Algonquian word for “war leader” (and later a political epithet for a man who could not keep his mind on one side of the fence), is the perfect author for this limbo.
